Travel Health

Our Travel Health Service

Our Practice Nurses can provide Travel Health Advice and give vaccines that are available on the NHS for travel.

They are unable to give vaccines that aren’t available free of charge or provide prescriptions for anti malaria medication. So if you need these you will need to see an alternative provider instead or as well. These providers may charge for advice and/or NHS vaccines as well as the non-NHS vaccines, certificates and anti malaria medication/prescription.

See below for details of alternative providers and which vaccines are and aren’t available on the NHS.

The amount of notice required to provide the appropriate advice and vaccinations is usually 8 weeks prior to travel.

If you are travelling to a number of different countries or to unusual destinations it can take longer to complete the course of vaccinations required so you will need to see someone at least 12 weeks before you travel.

We strongly recommend that you visit a travel advice website as this will guide you through the vaccinations needed for the areas you are visiting which will help you decide who you need to see and when. Links to suitable websites can be found in the Travel Health section of the Practice website www.theheavitreepractice.co.uk

You should also check your vaccination history. You can do this by looking at your medical records online. Ask at reception if you’re not signed up for online access. If you don’t have a computer, the receptionist can print you a vaccination summary.

Before you can make an appointment to see the Practice Nurse you will need to complete and return a travel plan questionnaire. These can be obtained from reception or downloaded from our website.

When you bring your completed form to reception you will be offered a 30m appointment in 3 weeks’ time. This is to give the Practice Nurse time to review your travel plans against your clinical record and order in any vaccines you may need. If there is no suitable appointment before you travel the receptionist will recommend that you see a private provider instead. We cannot squeeze travel appointments in at the expense of other patients’ appointments irrespective of when you are travelling or how many or few vaccinations you need.
